A Gold Coast native, James spent his childhood in the pool or at Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club. James has competed in two Olympic Games, achieving a Bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. James won Gold and Silver medals swimming freestyle in the 4x100m medley relay at the World Championships and Gold (Commonwealth Record) in the 4×100 freestyle relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
